Overview
Metropolitan Boroughs are local government districts that are subdivisions of 6 Metropolitan Counties: Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands, and West Yorkshire. These seats were last elected in 2016 and these elections were originally scheduled for 2020, but got postponed to 20201 due to COVID-19.
All Metropolitan Boroughs are up for election this year except Birmingham which elects all of its councillors every 4 years unlike every other Borough which elects a third of their councillors every 4 years, each third staggered by a year. Doncaster and Rotherham elect their councillors the same way as Birmingham but Doncaster's elections are being held this year as are Rotherham's (though they were originally scheduled for 2020). Salford is also electing all their councillors this year due to boundary changes but will revert to electing by thirds in future elections.
These councils last held elections in 2019 (though not for these seats) so results will be shown for both 2016 (when these seats in particular were last elected) and 2019 (when these councils last held council-wide elections).
These Metropolitan Counties no longer have their own councils but throughout the 2010s, all these Metropolitan Boroughs have been made part of Combined Authorities: Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire (as Sheffield City Region), West Midlands, and West Yorkshire have Combined Authorities that contain the same boroughs as the former Metropolitan Counties. Merseyside is part of Liverpool City Region (which also includes the borough of Halton), and Tyne and Wear is split between North of Tyne (which also includes Northumberland) in the north and North East (which also includes Durham) in the south.
These are urban councils in the North and Midlands and as a result are overwhelmingly Labour, who have a majority in 29 of the 36 councils (and have minority control of another 3).
