Overview
Unitary Authorities are called so as they represent one-tier of local government compared to the two-tier system used by places which have both a County Council and a District Council.
Some councils elect every seat every 4 years, and others only elect a third of their seats every four years with each third of councillors staggered by a year.
The last elections for seats that are electing all their councillors were in 2017 unless stated otherwise. The last elections for councils that are electing a third of their councillors were in 2016.
There are 3 new Unitary Authorities that are holding their inagual elections this year. Buckinghamshire is a former County Council that uses the same boungary. Northamptonshire is a former County Council that is being split into two Unitary Authorities, North Northamptonshire, and West Northamptonshire.
These are a mix of city councils, and larger more rural councils and so there is no discernable trend that can be applied to all of them in same way that it can for Metropolitan Boroughs and County Councils.
